From Otavalo take the newly paved road that goes by the lake Quicocha directly to Santa Rosa. 1.25 hour drive from Otavalo, Ecuador. From Otavalo take the road toward Quiroga/Cuicocha. Shortly before Cuicocha there is a left fork (labeled) toward Intag. From the community labeled Las Delicias begin your final descent to Santa Rosa. At a school yard with a small church is a sign for Cabanas El Refugio, pointing left. (Just after this the road curves sharply right to cross a bridge. If you cross the bridge, you’ve missed the turn-off to El Refugio). The lodge is one-quarter mile down this dirt road on the right side.​
